coliseum, colosseum
Both are variants of the same word, derived from the ancient name (colosseum) of the Flavian amphitheatre in Rome, which in turn was named after a large statue (or colossus) of Nero which stood nearby. The form Coliseum is used of theatres and music halls and, especially in America, of theatres and large buildings used for sport or exhibitions.

Modern English usage. 2014.
